Dr. Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes

Stella holds a Ph.D in Social Anthropology, an M.A. in Higher and Professional Education, and a B.Sc in Psychology. She holds certificates in Training and Development; Leadership and Management; and Public Speaking.

She works as a freelance consultant undertaking UK and overseas research, monitoring and evaluation; advising universities on increasing the impact of research on academic and non-academic audiences; training civil servants to use evidence in policy development and delivery; and teaching in UK and overseas universities. She is a trainer for the British Council Research Connect programme and has delivered workshops in Egypt, China and Brazil.

She has undertaken research on international migration from India which involved fieldwork in India, UK, Portugal, Dubai and Brazil. She has carried out a range of policy focused social research projects, including a study of British universities to inform social anthropology curricula and pedagogy, and of universities in UK and China to inform the development of knowledge-based international entrepreneurship, globalisation and innovation policies.  She was the external evaluator for a large European Commission science education project involving eleven countries. She is currently evaluating another European Commission project on migrant entrepreneurship which is being delivered in several countries.   

She has published a book and several academic papers as well as presented papers at national and international academic conferences. She has written reports and briefings on social research for Ministers, policy officials and professional bodies, and given presentations at several non-academic conferences.

She worked for sixteen years as a senior social researcher and policy adviser in several British Government departments. Prior to joining the civil service, she worked as a university lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University and also as a consultant in training, educational development and social research. She has run several three to five day training events for doctoral, early and mid-career researchers and university lecturers on research methods, writing research proposals, undertaking evidence-based policy development and implementation, communicating research findings to academic and non-academic audiences, and working in national and international teams.  She has mainly worked in the UK, but also undertaken overseas assignments.

Dr Mascarenhas-Keyes is of Indian origin, and was born and brought up in Kenya, where she taught in a secondary school for two years. She has four children. She is keen to use her extensive multi-faceted professional experience and expertise to assist the capacity building of researchers and academics in the international HE sector.
